Big Joe Shelton was born in the Black Belt Prairie region of northeast Mississippi in 1951.
As a child Joe sang in church and grammer school choirs. In his teens he bagan playing the harmonica and guitar. Songwriting soon followed.
In the mid seventies he moved to Chicago and experienced the urban blues scene firsthand.
Returning to Mississippi Big Joe was pursued by the music that had become his passion.
He has played with blues legends Big Joe Williams, Furry Lewis, Son Thomas, Fenton Robinson, Willie King, R.L. Burnside, and Johnny Rawls.
He has worked with the Howlin' Wolf Blues Society's "blues in the school" educational program.
