Bluegrass Monday August 25 with the Keisler Brothers

Dear Friends of Bluegrass Music,

There's some great bluegrass happening in the next few days, and
there are some special giveaways at the next Bluegrass Monday concert.
Read on=85

The Keisler Brothers will perform a concert of bluegrass music
this Monday, August 25, at 7 PM at Atkins Celebration Hall, 101 South
Pruett Street, in downtown Paragould, Arkansas. The concert is part
of the Bluegrass Monday concert series presented by KASU 91.9 FM.
Admission is free, but KASU will literally "pass the hat" to collect
money to pay the group. Suggested donation is $5 per person.

From Sheridan, Arkansas, The Keisler Brothers have been playing
bluegrass music together since the early 1980s. Redmond and Randy
Keisler were the nucleus of the group Custer's Last Band which
performed extensively in Arkansas and surrounding states in the 1980s.
Now, the Keisler Brothers Bluegrass Band is one of the most in-demand
area bluegrass groups, appearing at numerous music festivals across
Arkansas each year.

Redmond Keisler sings and plays Dobro for the band. Randy
Keisler plays bass and sings. Other members of the Keisler Brothers
Bluegrass Band include banjo player Rodney Heslep, who also performed
as part of Custer's Last Band. Roy Hale sings and plays guitar in the
group.

The Keisler Brothers are active in the Arkansas Bluegrass
Association, and they participate in the Bluegrass In The Schools
program, an effort to introduce bluegrass music to children. More
information about the group is available at www.arkansasbluegrass.com.

In addition to appearing in Paragould in the Bluegrass Monday
concert series on Monday, the Keisler Brothers will perform a concert
of Bluegrass Gospel music this Sunday, August 24, at 6 PM at Highland
Drive Baptist Church, 515 East Highland Drive in Jonesboro. There is
no admission fee to that concert, but a love offering will be taken
for the band. The Keisler Brothers will also appear on Midday, the
local news program at 11 AM, on KAIT-TV on Monday, August 25.

In addition to the concert by the Keisler Brothers at 7 PM, area
bluegrass musicians are invited to come to Atkins Celebration Hall
beginning at 5 PM for an open jam session. Musicians are asked to
bring only acoustic instruments and to play only bluegrass music. The
jam sessions will end promptly at 6:45 PM prior to the beginning of
the concert.

Also, Simply Delicious Catering will provide a country-style
buffet meal beginning at 5 PM for a cost of $10 including tax and a
drink. Seating at the venue will around tables or in auditorium-style
seating.

At the concert in Paragould, KASU will have a drawing for
audience members to win one of ten pair of tickets to see Rhonda
Vincent and the Rage who are scheduled to perform September 19 at
Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. KASU will also have a drawing
for a pair of 3-day passes to the Bluegrass Fan Fest, held in October
in Nashville, Tennessee, featuring over 60 bluegrass acts including
the Grascals, Doyle Lawson, Dan Tyminski, J.D. Crowe, Blue Highway and
Cherryholmes.

Bluegrass Monday concerts are held on the fourth Monday night of
each month. These concerts are presented with support from Backbeat
Music, Town and Country Realty, the Posey Peddler, the Northeast
Arkansas Bluegrass Association and KASU.

KASU, 91.9 FM, is the 100,000 watt public broadcasting service of
Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. KASU features bluegrass music
Saturdays from noon to 4 PM and Sundays from noon to 2 PM. For more
information, or to be removed from this mailing list, contact KASU
Program Director Marty Scarbrough at mscarbro@astate.edu or
870-972-2367.

I look forward to seeing you at one of these concerts by the
Keisler Brothers!

RIP Maurice Reedus 3/24/1930-8/18/2008: Maurice Reedus is best known
as Robert Lockwood, Jr.'s longtime saxophonist. Word came from Mary
Lockwood that Maurice left us on Monday, August 18, 2008 at 1:30pm in
the Cleveland VA Hospital, after a long battle with cancer. His spare,
jazz-tinged sax style was the perfect foil to Lockwood's stylized
guitar, and that combination appeared over the years on classic
Lockwood albums such as Contrasts, Does 12, and I Got To Find Me A
WomanMaurice was associated with the . Lockwood sound for 35 years.
His resume also includes work with Nancy Wilson, Jimmy Smith, Red
Holloway, Hank Marr, Lou Rawls, and many others. There is more
information and photos on Robert Lockwood, Jr.'s website, which you
can see by clicking here, and then clicking on Maurice's name. Goodbye
to a good man and a great player who was essential to that Robert
Lockwood, Jr. sound that we loved.

RIP Lee Young 3/7/1914-7/31/2008: Leonidas Raymond "Lee" Young was
pioneering jazz and blues drummer and the brother of legendary jazz
saxophonist Lester Young. Lee passed away on July 31 at his home in
Los Angeles. He was 94. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana to a musical
family, Lee spent his childhood touring in various carnival and
vaudeville acts with his older brother Lester. He cut his first
records in the 1930s with Fats Waller. Lee Young moved to Los Angeles

credited as such, he played a major role in the musical development of
West Coast blues and early R & B. Lee was part of Maxwell Davis's band
for many years, and recorded on Aladdin, Imperial, Specialty, and many
of the West Coast labels. He is on most of Percy Mayfield's Specialty

National Women In Blues Festival - September 26-27

It is time for the 3rd National Women in Blues Festival in Wilmington
North Carolina this September 26th and 27th 2008. Still leveling the
playing field for the women of and bringing in another great line up
with artists from coast to coast including headliners from coast to
coast like Gaye Abegdebola on Friday and Candye Kane on Saturday. Both
ladies are well known to the blues world as powerful performers.

Many in Wilmington are familiar with Gaye from her multiple
appearances with Saffire=96 the Uppity Blues Women. She has toured
nationally and internationally, and has won numerous awards including
the prestigious Blues Music Award (the Grammy of the blues industry).
As of Summer 2008, Adegbalola has 12 CDs in national distribution,
including 3 on her own label, Hot Toddy Music. This years festival is
in for a double treat as Gaye will be bringing her History of Women in
Blues from the 1920s to today. She shares video and/or audio clips
from Bessie Smith to Billie Holiday, from Rosetta Tharpe to Big Mama
Thornton, from Etta Baker to Etta James and many others. She
illuminates how the history of working class black women is documented
in blues lyrics and after the screening and short intermission she
will return to the stage with her musicians to do a live show.

Candye is no stranger to the blues world and brings a dynamic to the
stage seldom seen in our region. Candye Kane may still be a well-kept
mainstream secret but in most underground circles, her diva status is
legendary. She has been making music professionally for over two
decades and toured worldwide since 1992, performing for amazingly
diverse audiences. She played at the French Embassy in Rome for the
President of Italy, headlined the Rhythm Riot, a rockabilly and R&B
festival in the UK, and belted it out alongside Ray Charles at the
Cognac Blues Festival. She slayed em' at the Cannes Film Festival,
kept them enthralled at New York Gay Pride and most recently, helped
organize a thirteen city tour of the Netherlands for special needs
kids.

Also on this years festival line up we see the return of NY solo blues
woman Sarah Lemiuex who's smoky, silky voice, and unique brand of
"storytelling" blues and jazz are getting people hooked all over the
world, from Quebecois radio shows to Australian podcasts and
everywhere in between. Also returning is Greensboro blues artist Patty
Benson who Alan Shuttro of Blues Wax said "Patty Benson doesn't just
sing the blues-she whispers, cries and even belts out the blues. Her
vocals ring with confidence and emotion. She's sultry and bold as she
spills out her lyrics on each and every song." New to this years stage
is Peggy Ratusz and Big Road who recently played the semi-finals of
the 2008 International Blues Challenge representing NC's own Piedmont
Blues Preservation Society's after winning their last Blues Challenge.
As she does each year, our festival will open with the Regions
Grandmother of Blues, Mrs Rose Lucas backed by her husband Charlie
Lucas. Both are well known to area music lovers and the blues
community This year will also include a blues jam on Saturday
afternoon that will be hosted by Michele and the Midnight Blues who
represented the Cape Fear Blues Society in the 2006 International
Blues Challenge in Memphis.. Expect a few surprise at the jam and some
special guest performers too! Check the web site often for up dates
and additions!

This years festival takes place in two locations showcasing the areas
diversity. Friday night will take place at Greenfield Lake
Amphitheater over looking Greenfield Lake where Richard Geer and Kim
Bassinger shot scenes for the film No Mercy and Saturday night will be
at one of the areas newest clubs The Cellar next to the Cape Fear
River in downtown Wilmington, The Saturday afternnon jam will also
take place at the Cellar. Tickets on sale through the web site but the
Saturday Jam in the afternoon is FREE and open to the public. Regular
tickets are $20 per night ($25 at the gate/door) or $40 for a weekend
pass. Those who want in on the reserved seating at both venues can
become individual sponsors for $100 for the weekend (this includes 2
weekend passes with reserved seating both nights and a perk bag of
goodies) Both locations serve food and drink and we will have some
additional vendors on site.

Join us for another addition of the National Women in Blues Festival
and support great women artists and the one true musical genre that
was born in the USA of the African American experience. Having moved a
little earlier in the Fall season we expect great weather, so be
prepared to feel the warm breeze on your skin and Magnolia in the air
at WiB3 .

August 10, 2008

RIP Isaac Hayes 8/20/1942-8/10/2008: Another great has left us: soul
legend Isaac Hayes passed away today at 2:08 this morning. He was 65.
A fixture of the City of Memphis, Hayes was best known for his hits
"Hot Buttered Soul", "The Theme from Shaft", and "Black Moses". He was
a three-time Grammy(R) award winner (two for "Shaft" and one for
"Black Moses"). He was a crucial part of Stax Records, serving not
only as a star, but as a behind-the-scenes writer, arranger, and
musician. He crafted songs for Otis Redding and Sam and Dave during
his Stax tenure. In later years, he was well known as the voice of
Chef in the animated TV show South Park, but left the show after it
made a parody of Scientology, which was his religion. To read the CNN

Big Red & the Soul Benders to perform August 18th at 7:00 PM

KASU presents Big Red & the Soul Benders at the next Blue
Monday-Paragould on August 18th from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Brittny's
Steakhouse in downtown Paragould.

Kelly "Big Red" Taylor whose soul wrenching vocals grab you from the
very second she begins singing, will have you on your feet. Her live
performances are guaranteed to captivate audiences of all ages through
her vocal talent and stage persona. When "Big Red" takes the stage
its all hers! Big Red had been influenced by such female blues icons
as "The Queen of the Blues" Koko Taylor; Big Mama Thornton, Janis
Joplin and Etta James, to name a few.

"Big Red" is backed by the Soul Benders =96 all seasoned musicians
bringing dedication and professionalism to their music performances.
With more than 150 combined years of live experience, the Soul Benders
"know how to blues you" described from a reviewer at The Corner Caf=E9
in El Dorado, Arkansas. "The Soul Benders certainly provided the
perfect compliment to Big Red's stage presence. Jimmy 'Lightning'
Cash Smith shifted from rhythm to lead with ease and skill that is an
absolute necessity in a three-piece configuration. The experience of
Mike 'Monotone' Taylor shined through his artful work on the bass;
while the steady beats of veteran percussionist Wolf 'Wolfie' Simone
provided the foundation necessary for this level of entertainment."

Big Red & the Soul Benders are the recipients of the 2005 Arkansas
Blues and Heritage award given to the best new blues band at the
Arkansas Blues and Heritage Festival (formerly the King Biscuit Blues
Festival). Currently members of the Arkansas Arts on Tour, Big Red &
the Soul Benders were chosen to be in the Women in Blues Fest 2006 and
were invited back in 2007. They have participated in the IBC 2007 and
were chosen to represent the Sonny Blue Blues society at the IBC this
year and appeared on the main stage at the Arkansas Blues and Heritage
Fest in October 2007.

Admission to the Blue Monday-Paragould concert featuring Big Red & the
Soul Benders is free thanks to sponsors Joe Holifield =96 Attorney at
Law and KASU, but seating is limited.

Blue Monday concerts are held on the second Monday in the Brick Room
at the Depot Diner in Newport and on the third Monday of each month at
Brittny's Steakhouse in downtown Paragould.

Bob Corritore Blues Newsletter - Jimmy Rogers news, photos, videos, reviews

August 6, 2008

Jimmy Rogers in the News: Jimmy Rogers is simply one of the greatest
blues artists of all time. His late 40s/early 50s work with Muddy
Waters and Little Walter defined the genre to become celebrated as
Chicago Blues. His voice was perhaps the sweetest voice in the blues;
and his clever, yet understated guitar work was the perfect foil to
the styles of Muddy and Walter. His hits include "That's All Right",
"Ludella", "You're The One", and "Walking By Myself". He passed away
over ten years ago, but his music and memory are kept alive through
the timelessness of his music. Some recent news concerning Jimmy
Rogers:

  1. Unissued Jimmy Rogers Studio Tracks Produced by Bob Corritore to be
Released as Bonus Tracks on Blind Pig Limited-Edition LP Release of
Feelin' Good: Blind Pig Records plans a limited-edition, LP only,
re-release of the Jimmy Rogers album Feeling Good. This highly
acclaimed record features backing by Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers
(featuring Junior Watson on guitar!) from sessions conducted in 1983
and 1984. The original LP release on the Murray Brothers label
featured only nine songs, and so Blind Pig was looking to fill the
special edition re-release with some bonus tracks. Jerry Del Giudice
and Edward Chmelewski approached Bob Corritore this summer at the
Chicago Blues Festival, asking if he had any unissued Jimmy Rogers
tracks. Bob researched his master tape vaults, and located two
beautiful unissued songs from a 1992 Phoenix session. The tracks are
an alternate take of "Out On The Road" (different from the one
appearing on Bob Corritore/All-Star Blues Sessions) and a remake of
"She Loves Another Man". The session artists are Jimmy Rogers (guitar
and vocals), Bob Corritore (harmonica), Buddy Reed (guitar), S.E.
Willis (piano), Bruce Lopez (bass), and the great Chico Chism (drums).
These two cuts will be added to the re-release of Feeling Good as
bonus tracks! Look for this limited-edition, LP only pressing out in
    early 2009!
  1. Harmonica Ace Mark Hummel to Release Unissued Live Recordings by
Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Luther Tucker, and Mississippi Johnny
Waters: Mark Hummel reports that he will release a CD titled Mark
Hummel's Chicago Blues Party featuring live recordings by Jimmy
Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Luther Tucker, and Mississippi Johnny Waters.
These artists were backed on West Coast concert dates by Mark Hummel's
Blues Survivors featuring a young Rusty Zinn. Though these tapes are
from the sound board, they have been mixed and mastered to bring out a
great sound quality, and the performances are stunning. Mark plans to
release this on his own Rockinitis label.
  1. Jimmy Rogers Book in Review Stage at University Of Illinois Press:
Dr. Wayne Everett Goins has been working on a Jimmy Rogers biography
called That's All Right: The Jimmy Rogers Story. Wayne reports that he
has completed years of extensive research, has written the book, and
it is currently being reviewed by the University of Illinois Press for
publication approval. This will be an exciting and timely biography of
a great bluesman whose influence in the blues cannot be overstated.

New Photos Added to BobCorritore.com: Special thanks are due for the
following photo contributions that have been recently posted to the
photo pages of www.bobcorritore.com. A great portrait of Smokey Wilson
with a Flying V guitar was contributed by Jeanette Clarke-Lodovici
(William Clarke's widow), and a scan of a Smokey Wilson 8-track tape
was contributed by Rich Pietras (Smokey's good friend and former
manager). To see the Smokey Wilson photo page, click here. A couple
spectacular images of Honeyboy Edwards were contributed by Nicolas

will appear at Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Rhythm Room in
Phoenix, AZ backed by The Rhythm Room All-Stars (Bob Corritore, Chris
James, Patrick Rynn, and Brian Fahey). Johnny Dyer is a true West
Coast link to Chicago Blues, as he is the greatest Los Angeles based
purveyor of the music of Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, and Little
Walter. He is a stunning harmonica player, as well as an amazing
vocalist. He will often perform with other harmonica players when
singing Muddy and Jimmy Rogers songs in the true tradition of that
music. He has gained much notoriety of late for his featured work as a
member of the all-star aggregate, The Mannish Boys. The Rhythm Room is
located at 1019 E. Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open
at 8pm, cover charge is $8. Rack Shack Barbeque will be available at

Phillip Walker Performs this Saturday at the Rhythm Room: Phillip
Walker appears Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Rhythm Room. Delta
Groove recording artist Phillip Walker and his amazing band deliver a
wonderful blues, based in both Phillip's deep Louisiana roots and his
long time West Coast affiliations. His sound is a spare,
guitar-and-horn-driven romp with a distinct urban feel. A brilliant
vocalist and guitarist, Phillip is considered among the top touring
blues acts today. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School
Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open at 8pm, cover charge is $12. Rack
Shack Barbeque will be available at this event. This night will be a

My new internet radio project is called KGPL. Here's how it can work
for you. If you have some mp3 files available on the internet you can
add them to the Library. Then you can create a playlist with those
songs and if you want to you can add other songs from the Library that
complement your sound. Then you can use the embeds and widgets to add
your songs and playlists to your website or myspace.

Here's an example of a KGPL playlist in a popup player.

Play onClick="window.open('http://www.kgpl.org/play_list?name=The_Mudcats_with_Chris_and_Robb_posted_on_18_Jul_2008_04:51',
'songpopup', 'width=520,height=240,left=400,top=140');">popup flash
player.

If that doesn't work in your email here's a link you can use.

And here's the link to the KGPL home page.

Finally I want to draw your attention to a couple of interviews
recently added to Delta Boogie.

Memphis Gold talks about playing for the troops.

After nearly 70 years childhood friends Joe Lee and Calvin "Fuzz"
Jones have a reunion.

Billy Jones - Cognac Blues Passions Festival - France

Hi everybody,

The European tour was a great success.

The band had a wonderful experience at the Cognac Blues Passions
Festival in France!
I enjoyed listening to all the outstanding groups who performed at the
festival, and getting to meet some of my idols like Willie King, Joan
Baez and of course my all time hero Bobby Rush and his beautiful wife.

We also met the chairman of the Hennesy Corporation and had a caviar
and escargot "brunch" at the Hennesy Castle while two butlers waited
on us hand & foot. ...very impressive... weird, but impressive.

Then we got to perform for about 15,000 screaming French fans, sign a
lot of cd's and autographs and take a lot of pictures. I was humbled
by the experience.
Please visit the Blues Passions website and check out the PDF pamplets
to find out what happened at this historic event.

thanks,
Billy Jones

My band is mentioned in the 24 Juillet and the 25 Juillet issues of
the "Nothing But the Blues" CHRONIQUE DE COGNAC BLUES PASSIONS.
