DC Minner passes

I got word yesterday form Oklahoma that long time blues legend DC
Minner passed away this week. For those of you in the know about blues
music you will know that DC and Selby Minner are the folks behind the
Dusk to Dawn Blues Festival held in Rentiesville, OK, every Labor Day
weekend. Minner's old home place is the night club that sits at the
front of the property where the festival is held. Minner is a member
of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. The passing of DC Minner is a
tremendous loss to the world of blues.

Please pass this along in remembrance of DC Minner.

Country Music Loses A Legend - Eddy Arnold Dies

Special Mailing... The Death of Eddy Arnold

Country Music today lost one of the industry's giants. Eddy Arnold, a
member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, died around 4:40 a.m. today
at NHC Place in Cool Springs at the age of 89. He was the affable
Tennessee Plowboy who brought elegance, sophistication and millions of
fans to country music.

Mr. Arnold's contributions to the history of American popular music
were immense. He sold more than 85 million records, with 37 singles
charting on the pop charts and many more impacting the country charts.
He ranks as Billboard magazine's single most popular country artist
of all time. He was a star of stage and screen, and he was also a
public face of Nashville music for decades. Hits such as Make The
World Go Away, I Want To Go With You, Turn The World Around, I Really
Don't Want To Know and You Don't Know Me charmed a nation and moved
country toward the popular mainstream.

Mr. Arnold was preceded in death by his wife Sally Gayhart Arnold, who
died March 11, 2008. He is survived by their children, Richard Edward
Jr., of Nashville, and Jo Ann Pollard, of Brentwood, Tenn. He is also
survived by two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Music News Nashville would like to extend our condolences and
sympathies to Mr. Arnold's family and friends for their loss.

Bluegrass Monday concert THIS Monday night!

Dear Friends of Bluegrass Music,

Please note that May's Bluegrass Monday concert is this Monday
night, May 12, and this is a show you won't want to miss!

Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike will perform a concert of bluegrass
music on Monday, May 12, at 7 PM at Atkins Celebration Hall, 101 South
Pruett Street, in downtown Paragould, Arkansas. The concert is part
of the Bluegrass Monday concert series presented by KASU 91.9 FM.
Admission is free, but KASU will literally "pass the hat" to collect
money to pay the group.

From singing as a child in church to appearing on the Grand Ol'
Opry with bluegrass legend Charlie Louvin, Valerie Smith is well-known
as an outstanding entertainer. Her soulful, unique voice has wowed
audiences at concerts across America as well as in Canada, the United
Kingdom and throughout Europe.

Smith is the winner of multiple awards from the International
Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA), and she has been nominated for
Song Of The Year and Emerging Artist Of The Year awards from the IBMA.
Her music has also been nominated for Grammy and Dove awards. She
has recorded five CDs, the three most recent of which have featured
her band, Liberty Pike.

Smith is a Missouri native now living in Bell Buckle, Tennessee,
near Nashville. Her upbringing in tiny Holt, Missouri, exposed her to
Western music, jazz, bluegrass and Gospel music. She attended the
University of Missouri Conservatory of Music in Kansas City, receiving
a degree in vocal music education, which led to stints teaching music
in schools. A chance encounter with old-time musicians Junior and
Betty Parker led to pursuit of a career as a bluegrass artist.

Featured in Smith's band, Liberty Pike, is acclaimed fiddler,
songwriter and vocalist Becky Buller. Buller is a native of southern
Minnesota who began playing violin using the Suzuki method at age ten.
At age thirteen, she joined her parents' bluegrass band and was
participating in fiddle contests, winning the Minnesota Junior
Fiddling Championship.

Buller graduated from East Tennesee State University, and while
there, she was an active participant in that institution's acclaimed
bluegrass and country music studies program. She has won multiple
acclaimed songwriting contests, and her songs have been recorded by
bluegrass artists such as Rhonda Vincent, David Parmley, Mark Newton,
IIIrd Tyme Out, and Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver. Recordings of her
songs have also been hits on numerous bluegrass music airplay and
sales charts. Buller has recorded two CDs of her own and has appeared
as a guest artist on over a dozen other releases.

Music by Valerie Smith will be featured extensively on KASU's
bluegrass music radio program, Down Home Harmonies, heard Saturdays
from noon to 3 PM and Sundays from noon to 2 PM on 91.9 FM. KASU's
Marty Scarbrough will interview Valerie on Down Home Harmonies at 1 PM
on Sunday. Valerie and Liberty Pike will also perform live on Midday
on KAIT-TV, channel 8, at 11:00 AM on Monday.

In addition to the concert by Valerie Smith and Liberty Pike at 7
PM, area bluegrass musicians are invited to come to Atkins Celebration
Hall beginning at 5 PM for an open jam session. Musicians are asked
to bring only acoustic instruments and to play only bluegrass music.
The jam sessions will end promptly at 6:45 PM prior to the beginning
of the concert.

Also, Simply Delicious Catering will provide a country-style
buffet meal beginning at 5 PM for a cost of $10 including tax and a
drink. Seating at the venue will around tables or in auditorium-style
seating.

Bluegrass Monday concerts are typically held on the fourth Monday
night of each month, however, for the month of May, the concert will
be held on the second Monday due to the Memorial Day holiday being the
fourth Monday of the month.

These concerts are presented with support from Backbeat Music,
Town and Country Realty, the Posey Peddler, the Northeast Arkansas
Bluegrass Association and KASU.

KASU, 91.9 FM, is the 100,000 watt public broadcasting service of
Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. For more information, contact
KASU Program Director Marty Scarbrough at mscarbro@astate.edu or
870-972-2367.

I hope that you can join us this Monday night for a great night
of food, fellowship and bluegrass!

Sunday In The Park plus Hairy Larry and George

Sunday In The Park starts May 11 at 2:00 pm with a guitar workshop and
workshop jam session given by Chris "Stinger" Stevens. Then we're
having a big jam day with electric and acoustic jams. The Mudcats will
be hosting electric jams and Fred and Suzanne will be hosting acoustic
jams. So whatever you play bring your ax and jam.

http://deltaboogie.com/sundayinthepark

George and I had a great time last March playing at the ASU
Multicultural Night and at Studio Joe in Little Rock. Here's the links
to the shows on archive.org.

http://www.archive.org/details/hl2008-03-13
http://www.archive.org/details/hl2008-03-14

I've also been making some improvements at Delta Boogie. I added a
HiFi station to Delta Boogie Radio.

http://deltaboogie.com/hifi

The HiFi station has all the same songs as the dialup station but in a
CD quality mp3. If you're on dialup, like me, I recommend the dialup
version.

http://deltaboogie.com/radio

This plays without skipping over dialup connections. Then when you
find a song you like you can download it CD quality from the HiFi
station.

I also completely revamped the Video section.

http://deltaboogie.com/video.htm

If you have original tunes you'd like to promote on Delta Boogie Radio
or if you have internet videos you would like to see on Delta Boogie
let me know.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

I've been making a video in a day. I call them MusePods.

Eureka Springs Blues Weekend

2008 Eureka Springs Blues Weekend- May 29 through June 1, 2008

The "Queen of the Blues," Koko Taylor, and Native American blues band
Indigenous will headline shows at THE Auditorium May 29 and 30,
respectively, as part of the 2008 Eureka Springs Blues Weekend. The complete
weekend lineup, including 70 shows at 15 venues in 4 days, was announced
today by city Special Events Coordinator, Janet Alexander, and event
producer, Charles "Rags" Ragsdell.

"Earlier this year, Eureka was proud to host the King of the Blues, B.B.
King," commented Ragsdell. "And now we're bringing the Queen of the Blues to
town in the same year - fantastic!"

Blues Weekend begins May 29 and runs through June 1. Major acts are also
scheduled for The Barefoot Ballroom and Ozark Room in the Basin Park Hotel.
Friday blues diva LZ Love and Baton Rouge bluesman Larry Garner perform. On
Saturday the venue features Ruf Records artist Deborah Coleman, and
Arkansas' own Michael Burks.

Blues concerts are also planned at numerous clubs around town. Venues
include the Cat House Pub, Center Street, Chelsea's, Eureka Live, Henri's,
Jack's Place, Lumberyard, Pied Piper, Rowdy Beaver, Shawbee's, and Tiki
Torch.

The city's lineup of free Blues Weekend shows is the most extensive in
recent years. Eighteen free shows are scheduled at Basin Park. They run
hourly from Noon to 5 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from
Noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday. "It could be our most ambitious schedule ever,"
commented city Special Events Coordinator, Janet Alexander. "One of our
goals this year was to give people lots of quality choices, and I think we've
accomplished that!"

Acts appearing at the various clubs around town and in Basin Park are
Michael "Hawkeye" Herman, The Ariels, Rich Berry, Geri 'Black and Blues',
Delta Highway, The Eureka Street Buskers, Full House, Joe Giles and The
Homewreckers, Scott Holt, Anna Horton, Gary Hutchinson Duo, Jones Van Jones,
The Jug Band, Karian, Kosmik Debris, Jeff Lee, Brian Martin, Oreo Blue,
Oysters Rockefeller, Joe Pitts Band, Patrick Sweany Band, Penelope and The
Unusual Suspects, Pope County Bootleggers, Rockin' Jake, Spent, Stella Blue
& Maddog, The Tablerockers, Lil' Dave Thompson, Underground Mafia, Vance
Orange Project, and Dayton Waters. Other acts are still to be announced.

Trampled Under Foot, 2008 International Blues Challenge (IBC) winners, will
open for Koko Taylor on Thursday night. Featuring siblings Danielle, Nick
and Kris Schnebelen, the group bested some 100 bands from around the world
at The Blues Foundation's annual battle of blues bands in Memphis in
February. Danielle was the talk of Beale Street, wowing people with both her
bass playing and her amazing vocals, and Nick won a new Gibson guitar and
Category 5 amp for the Albert King Award for Most Promising Guitarist.

Opening for Indigenous Friday night will be acoustic guitar virtuoso Rory
Block. Her most recent album was a much-lauded tribute to blues granddaddy
Robert Johnson. As the second act on the bill that night, Phil Berkowitz and
The Sean Carney Band will perform a 100th birthday tribute to Arkansas' own
"Jukebox King," Louis Jordan. The Sean Carney Band was the 2007 IBC winner.
Louis Jordan was born in Brinkley, Arkansas in 1908, and went on to chart 57
Top-40 hits (54 Top-10), including Let The Good Times Roll, Caledonia,
Saturday Night Fish Fry, and Choo Choo Ch' Boogie.

"This year we will be offering VIP ticketing for rows in the center -front
at both the auditorium and Basin Park Barefoot Ballroom shows, so we
encourage everyone to get their tickets quickly" Ragsdell said. Tickets and
information for the 2008 Eureka Springs Blues Weekend are available by
calling 888-855-7823 or by going online at http://www.eurekaspringsblues.com.

BLUES: Charleston, SC & beyond / early April, 2008

Blues fans:

Hope you are doing fine. We have some excellent shows coming into
the Charleston (SC) area that you need to know about...

1. "BLUES GUITAR WEEK" April 15-20

Two of the scene's hottest blues guitarists will land in Charleston
in the coming week; one performing electric, the other performing
acoustic. Both are HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. Here's the info:
-------------------
Tuesday, April 15, 9 pm
WHO: MELVIN TAYLOR
www.melvintaylorblues.com

WHERE: A Dough Re Mi Pizzeria & Blues Club
1220 Ben Sawyer Blvd (Sea Island Shopping Center), Mt. Pleasant, SC
29464, 843-881-6989
www.adoughremi.com

ADMISSION: $10

MELVIN TAYLOR, born in Mississippi in 1959 but a longtime resident of
Chicago, came to notoriety in his early twenties when he was chosen by
Pinetop Perkins to join the Legendary Blues Band for a 1981 European
tour. Melvin so impressed French record producer Didier Tricard that
he was ushered into a Paris studio to cut an album...1982's "Blues on
the Run" (which was finally released in the USA in 1994 on Evidence
Records). Melvin also appeared on Alligator Records' important 1987
compilation LP "The New Bluebloods: The Next Generation of Chicago
Blues", an album which helped publicize the general good health of
the Windy City blues scene at that time. He has released a number
of other albums since that time.

Long a star on the European blues scene, MELVIN TAYLOR is back home
now and ready to conquer his homeland. Combining the ferocity of
Buddy Guy, Jimi Hendrix, and Stevie Ray with jazz leanings a la Wes
Montgomery and Kenny Burrell, MELVIN TAYLOR is a monster guitarist
whose unpredictable live shows are the stuff of rumor. He is also a
convincing singer and sports a very tough rhythm section.

This will be MELVIN TAYLOR's very first Charleston area appearance
and we hope that EVERY electric guitarist in the city will come out
and watch this master in action.

PS: A DOUGH RE MI is Charleston's ONLY dedicated all-blues club. We
urge you to SUPPORT this fine, independent family-run American
business...The PA is sounding great (thanks, Stuart) and the food &
staff are EXCELLENT!

GEOFF ACHISON hails from Australia, where he grew up listening to
American rock and blues. He is respected among his peers as a highly
technical but passionate guitarist and singer who is equally skilled
on electric (with his band The Souldiggers) or, as in this case,
acoustic guitar. Geoff is recipient of the coveted Albert King Award
and teaches annually at Jorma Kaukonen's Fur Peace Guitar Camp. He
recently relocated his family from Australia to Atlanta, GA but
continues to travel across the USA, UK, and Oz.

GEOFF ACHISON may be familiar to some of you from his once-a-year
performances at the Piccolo Spoleto Homegrown Blues Series. His
wild, virtuosic renditions of Jimi Hendrix, Delta blues numbers, and
great originals make him a MUST-SEE talent. Don't miss this "Blues
Thunder From Down Under!"

(Stevie Kent, drums; Chris Watts, bass) focus on the blues in this
special appearance. Longtime fans will remember Johnny and Stevie as
2/3 of The Jumper Cables, a blues-rock institution that ruled the
Carolina coast in the late '80s-early '90s. They continue to be one
of the area's top club draws.

3:15-4:30 pm: A TRIBUTE TO LITTLE WALTER, featuring DENNIS GRUENLING
and STEVE GUYGER
www.dennisgruenling.com Two of the East Coast's top harmonica players pay tribute to Little
Walter Jacobs, probably the greatest blues harp player of all time.
Dennis's new CD "I Just Keep Loving Him" (2007, Backbender) features
Guyger, plus Kim Wilson, Rick Estrin, and others. This will be a
classic show for anyone who loves the Mississippi saxophone.
First-time Charleston appearances for both Gruenling and Guyger
(formerly with the legendary Jimmy Rogers).

4:45-6 pm: RANDY MCALLISTER
www.randymcallister.com The singing drummer/harmonica blower from Texas returns with his
feisty trio, performing his all-original songbook of mad Lone Star
blues/roadhouse rock/Tex Mex/swamp music. One of the most original
guys on the scene today and one of our favorites! If you haven't
seen Randy before, you need to check him out. His latest effort
"Dope Slap Soup" was nominated for a Grammy.

6:15-8 pm: EDDIE SHAW & THE WOLF GANG
From Chicago, the quintessential Windy City blues band. Eddie Shaw
led Howlin' Wolf's band for the last eight years of the Wolf's life.
Before that, Eddie worked with Magic Sam, Hip Linkchain, and others.
A master blues saxman and vocalist, Eddie Shaw is joined by his son
Vaan Shaw (on triple-necked guitar...I kid you not), Shorty Gilbert
on bass, and drums. It is a privilege to have Eddie Shaw & the Wolf
Gang once again grace our stage...ESSENTIAL CHICAGO BLUES. This is
the music you NEED TO HEAR.

Busy music week at Studio Joe

Monday March 24: Pat Wictor at 7:30 p.m. Concert, $10 admission
Tuesday March 25: Open Mic 6 til 10 p.m. (more oriented to singers) free
Wednesday March 26: Open Mic 6 til 10 p.m. (more oriented to
instrumentalists) free
Thursday March 27 [rented out for a private party]
Friday March 28; Carla Ulbrich at 7:30 p.m. Concert, $10 admission

This is, as far as anyone associated with the place can recall, the
first time there has been Something Happening there every night of the
work-week.

Pat Wictor and Carla Ulbrich are both folk musicians, but they come
from very different corners of the area covered by that genre.

An American by birth, Pat Wictor was raised outside of the United
States until his teenage years, living in Venezuela, Holland, Norway,
and England. This time abroad gave him an unusually deep awareness of
being a resident of a country while also a world citizen. Through
these early experiences, he gained an appreciation for taking
diffferent paths to arrave at the same destination. His
performances--part fireside chat, part meditation on matters earthly
and transcendent--feature his originals. In addition to his own tunes,
he is quick to offer up a newly-discovered lyric from another
performer, or a fresh arrangement of a traditional song, delighting in
introducing his audience to innovative material. With flowing red hair
and zen-like calm, Pat embraces his audience with the sincerity of his
music and the clarity of his voice, inviting them in.

If you listen to Dr. Demento, you've already heard of Carla Ulbrich:
she's the one who wishes she had the copyright on a certain
Four-letter word. She's also developing a whole new angle on her
career as the Singing Patient, exploring the lighter side of being
sick: she is stopping in Little Rock on her way to emcee a hospital
fundraiser in Alexandria, LA. Her basic material, though, remains her
distinctive Southern-rooted humorous folk music, with tales of sweet
iced tea, difficult last names, and the mystic side of Waffle House.

Billy Lee Riley Recovering in Little Rock

Hello;

Just wanted to give a update on Billy Lee. It was a rough week for us.
Billy went through hip replacement on the 20th and did great,
but on Thursday he developed chest pains, on Sunday he was taken in
for emergency bypass surgery (5 bypasses) he did fine
on that but on Tues he developed a bleed with a clot in the chest wall
that required another emergency surgery. We got out of
ICU on Friday afternoon. Billy is now doing great, he is in good
spirits and knows that a lot of people were praying for him.
He is a very strong and positive person and is planning a full
recovery and being in better form than he ever was. Just
keep us in your prayers and thoughts and Billy will soon be back
rocking.We love all of you.

Joyce & Billy Lee Riley.
