Bob Corritore Blues Newsletter - Jimmy Rogers news, photos, videos, reviews

August 6, 2008

Jimmy Rogers in the News: Jimmy Rogers is simply one of the greatest
blues artists of all time. His late 40s/early 50s work with Muddy
Waters and Little Walter defined the genre to become celebrated as
Chicago Blues. His voice was perhaps the sweetest voice in the blues;
and his clever, yet understated guitar work was the perfect foil to
the styles of Muddy and Walter. His hits include "That's All Right",
"Ludella", "You're The One", and "Walking By Myself". He passed away
over ten years ago, but his music and memory are kept alive through
the timelessness of his music. Some recent news concerning Jimmy
Rogers:

  1. Unissued Jimmy Rogers Studio Tracks Produced by Bob Corritore to be
Released as Bonus Tracks on Blind Pig Limited-Edition LP Release of
Feelin' Good: Blind Pig Records plans a limited-edition, LP only,
re-release of the Jimmy Rogers album Feeling Good. This highly
acclaimed record features backing by Rod Piazza & The Mighty Flyers
(featuring Junior Watson on guitar!) from sessions conducted in 1983
and 1984. The original LP release on the Murray Brothers label
featured only nine songs, and so Blind Pig was looking to fill the
special edition re-release with some bonus tracks. Jerry Del Giudice
and Edward Chmelewski approached Bob Corritore this summer at the
Chicago Blues Festival, asking if he had any unissued Jimmy Rogers
tracks. Bob researched his master tape vaults, and located two
beautiful unissued songs from a 1992 Phoenix session. The tracks are
an alternate take of "Out On The Road" (different from the one
appearing on Bob Corritore/All-Star Blues Sessions) and a remake of
"She Loves Another Man". The session artists are Jimmy Rogers (guitar
and vocals), Bob Corritore (harmonica), Buddy Reed (guitar), S.E.
Willis (piano), Bruce Lopez (bass), and the great Chico Chism (drums).
These two cuts will be added to the re-release of Feeling Good as
bonus tracks! Look for this limited-edition, LP only pressing out in
    early 2009!
  1. Harmonica Ace Mark Hummel to Release Unissued Live Recordings by
Jimmy Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Luther Tucker, and Mississippi Johnny
Waters: Mark Hummel reports that he will release a CD titled Mark
Hummel's Chicago Blues Party featuring live recordings by Jimmy
Rogers, Eddie Taylor, Luther Tucker, and Mississippi Johnny Waters.
These artists were backed on West Coast concert dates by Mark Hummel's
Blues Survivors featuring a young Rusty Zinn. Though these tapes are
from the sound board, they have been mixed and mastered to bring out a
great sound quality, and the performances are stunning. Mark plans to
release this on his own Rockinitis label.
  1. Jimmy Rogers Book in Review Stage at University Of Illinois Press:
Dr. Wayne Everett Goins has been working on a Jimmy Rogers biography
called That's All Right: The Jimmy Rogers Story. Wayne reports that he
has completed years of extensive research, has written the book, and
it is currently being reviewed by the University of Illinois Press for
publication approval. This will be an exciting and timely biography of
a great bluesman whose influence in the blues cannot be overstated.

New Photos Added to BobCorritore.com: Special thanks are due for the
following photo contributions that have been recently posted to the
photo pages of www.bobcorritore.com. A great portrait of Smokey Wilson
with a Flying V guitar was contributed by Jeanette Clarke-Lodovici
(William Clarke's widow), and a scan of a Smokey Wilson 8-track tape
was contributed by Rich Pietras (Smokey's good friend and former
manager). To see the Smokey Wilson photo page, click here. A couple
spectacular images of Honeyboy Edwards were contributed by Nicolas
Teurnier of France's Soul Bag Magazine. Check out the 1972 shot of
Honeyboy playing guitar in front of Jazz Record Mart in Chicago! To
see the Honeyboy Edwards page, click here. A great early 1970s
portrait of Koko Taylor, as well as a live shot of Louis Myers playing
harp and Freddie Below (of The Aces) on drums were contributed by Marc
De Jonghe, who credits the Andr=E9 Hobus library of photographers Bob
Vanderschueren, Claude Meyer, Annique Massange, Andr=E9 Hobus, and Marc
De Jonghe. Click here to see the Koko Taylor page, and here to see The
Aces page. These contributions are greatly appreciated new additions
to our extensive and ever-growing photo section.
Dave Riley and Bob Corritore Performance in France on YouTube: We just
found this live performance by Dave Riley and Bob Corritore at the
Cognac Blues Passions Festival in France on July 25, 2008. They are
doing their own version of the Frank Frost song "Ride With Your Daddy
Tonight". To see the film clip, click here.

Phoenix, AZ backed by The Rhythm Room All-Stars (Bob Corritore, Chris
James, Patrick Rynn, and Brian Fahey). Johnny Dyer is a true West
Coast link to Chicago Blues, as he is the greatest Los Angeles based
purveyor of the music of Muddy Waters, Jimmy Rogers, and Little
Walter. He is a stunning harmonica player, as well as an amazing
vocalist. He will often perform with other harmonica players when
singing Muddy and Jimmy Rogers songs in the true tradition of that
music. He has gained much notoriety of late for his featured work as a
member of the all-star aggregate, The Mannish Boys. The Rhythm Room is

Fahey, Paris James, and more. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E.
Indian School Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open at 7pm, cover charge

Phillip Walker Performs this Saturday at the Rhythm Room: Phillip
Walker appears Saturday, August 9, 2008 at the Rhythm Room. Delta
Groove recording artist Phillip Walker and his amazing band deliver a
wonderful blues, based in both Phillip's deep Louisiana roots and his
long time West Coast affiliations. His sound is a spare,
guitar-and-horn-driven romp with a distinct urban feel. A brilliant
vocalist and guitarist, Phillip is considered among the top touring
blues acts today. The Rhythm Room is located at 1019 E. Indian School
Road, Phoenix, AZ 85014. Doors open at 8pm, cover charge is $12. Rack
Shack Barbeque will be available at this event. This night will be a

My new internet radio project is called KGPL. Here's how it can work
for you. If you have some mp3 files available on the internet you can
add them to the Library. Then you can create a playlist with those
songs and if you want to you can add other songs from the Library that
complement your sound. Then you can use the embeds and widgets to add
your songs and playlists to your website or myspace.

Here's an example of a KGPL playlist in a popup player.

Play onClick="window.open('http://www.kgpl.org/play_list?name=The_Mudcats_with_Chris_and_Robb_posted_on_18_Jul_2008_04:51',

Billy Jones - Cognac Blues Passions Festival - France

Hi everybody,

The European tour was a great success.

The band had a wonderful experience at the Cognac Blues Passions
Festival in France!
I enjoyed listening to all the outstanding groups who performed at the
festival, and getting to meet some of my idols like Willie King, Joan
Baez and of course my all time hero Bobby Rush and his beautiful wife.

We also met the chairman of the Hennesy Corporation and had a caviar
and escargot "brunch" at the Hennesy Castle while two butlers waited
on us hand & foot. ...very impressive... weird, but impressive.

Then we got to perform for about 15,000 screaming French fans, sign a
lot of cd's and autographs and take a lot of pictures. I was humbled
by the experience.
Please visit the Blues Passions website and check out the PDF pamplets
to find out what happened at this historic event.

thanks,
Billy Jones

Bluegrass Monday concert Monday July 28 with the Harmans

Dear Friends of Bluegrass Music,

KASU has another great concert planned for this upcoming Monday night!

The Harman Family will perform a concert of bluegrass music this
Monday, July 28, at 7 PM at Atkins Celebration Hall, 101 South Pruett
Street, in downtown Paragould, Arkansas. The concert is part of the
Bluegrass Monday concert series presented by KASU 91.9 FM. Admission
is free, but KASU will literally "pass the hat" to collect money to
pay the group. Suggested donation is $5 per person.

Mike Harman played banjo for Alison Krauss in her band Union
Station from 1986 to 1990, being featured on her platinum selling "Now
That I've Found You" CD and on her Grammy-nominated CD "Two Highways."
Mike has also been a member of the bluegrass bands Cedar Hill and the
Tennessee Gentlemen.

Beginning in 1975, Mike performed with his brother Bull and
sister Lori as the Harman Family. Now, the group features Mike, his
wife Stacy, and their three sons.

In addition to playing banjo, Mike Harman also plays guitar and
fiddle. Twenty-one-year-old Mark Harman plays guitar, banjo, bass and
Dobro. Jeff Harman, eighteen-years-old, plays bass and guitar.
Twelve-year-old John Harman plays mandolin. All of them, along with
Stacy Harman, are featured on vocals. Eighteen-year-old Corina
Logston will be featured fiddler for the group.

The Harman Family released their debut CD in August 2004. The
follow-up CD was released in January 2006, and that recording features
guest appearances from Alison Krauss, four-time world fiddle champion
Mike Cleveland, and Jeff Guernsey, a long-time member of Vince Gill's
band. Two additional CDs by the band were released this summer.

In their concerts, the Harman Family performs a mixture of
traditional and contemporary bluegrass music as well as some Gospel
tunes. The family also hosts its own monthly bluegrass music concert
series in their hometown of Shipman, Illinois.

In addition to the concert by the Harman Family at 7 PM, area
bluegrass musicians are invited to come to Atkins Celebration Hall
beginning at 5 PM for an open jam session. Musicians are asked to
bring only acoustic instruments and to play only bluegrass music. The
jam sessions will end promptly at 6:45 PM prior to the beginning of
the concert.

Also, Simply Delicious Catering will provide a country-style
buffet meal beginning at 5 PM for a cost of $10 including tax and a
drink. Seating at the venue will around tables or in auditorium-style
seating.

Bluegrass Monday concerts are held on the fourth Monday night of
each month. These concerts are presented with support from Backbeat
Music, Town and Country Realty, the Posey Peddler, the Northeast
Arkansas Bluegrass Association and KASU. Additional sponsors are also
being sought to assist with paying expenses to operate the concert
series. Potential sponsors are invited to contact Marty Scarbrough,
KASU Program Director, at 870-972-2367 or mscarbro@astate.edu.

Sunday In The Park, KGPL, Hairy Larry and George

Hi,

We did seven shows at the Craighead Forest Bandshell with Ricky Lane
capping the series. Thanks go out to The Wolfpack Band and all the
bands who came and played this spring. I have some audio and pics
already posted and more to come.

Here's the Sunday In The Park page with audio from May 11 featuring
Suzanne Michell and Uncle Fred..

http://deltaboogie.com/sundayinthepark/

Here's audio of The Mudcats with Chris "Stinger" Stevens and Robb Shelley.

http://deltaboogie.com/sundayinthepark051108/

And here's The Wolfpack Band on Delta Boogie with their new CD
recorded May 18 at Sunday In The Park.

http://deltaboogie.com/wolfpack/

The player I use on the page above is part of my new internet radio
station, KGPL. KGPL is an open source software project. It's running
on Google AppEngine. Anyone can listen and anyone can add songs. All
genres and all styles.

KGPL is not an mp3 hosting service. When you add a song you post a
link to an mp3 or ogg audio file already on the internet. So if it's a
complete song and you have the link you can add it.

http://www.kgpl.org

Please check it out and exercise it a little bit. I'm very proud of
it. If you have songs on the internet you are promoting please add
them. Let me know what works and what doesn't. I am still adding
features and hope to have playlists up soon.

I had a last minute call to play a party on July 4th with Scott
Mathes. A good time was had by all. Scott and I got to talking and he
remembered the first time we met, 25 years ago. Then I remembered a
song we did then, 25 years ago, and we played it. It was "Born In
Chicago".

Hairy Larry and George will be playing at Caffe Buono this Friday,
July 11. Then July 18 we'll be at The Edge Coffeehouse. Both in
Jonesboro. Please come and see us if you can. Also an early warning.
We're back at Caffe Buono August 1. So in case my next mailing is as
timely as this one you've been warned.

You can find our schedule here.

http://deltaboogie.com/hairylarryandgeorge

And there's some great audio there too.

I love getting replies to these emails. Send me some links. Let me
know what you've been doing. Let me promote your stuff on Delta Boogie
too.

Thanks,

Hairy Larry

Marlene Gremillion "One Woman Show" at the at the Arts and Science

Center in Pine Bluff

Artist Marlene Gremillion, a seven year Hot Springs Village resident,
is active in the visual arts in the Village and surrounding areas.
She is a member of Brushstrokes, a Hot Springs Village artist
organization, a member of Mid-Southern Watercolorists, an instructor
at the Arkansas Art Center in Little Rock, and an instructor at
National Park Community College Continuing Education. Her works are
collected by many across the country.

The Arts and Science Center of Pine Bluff, an exceptional gallery and
museum in Arkansas' Delta country, will host her one woman exhibition.
The exhibit displays her versatility of media (watercolor, oil,
pastel, collage, and mixed media), and her variety of subjects
(landscape, portrait, floral, and abstracts). Marlene draws on
nature for inspiration and enjoys sharing her knowledge with others.
At this exhibit of over fifty paintings, the artist will discuss her
work with a follow up question and answer session. Admission is free
and open to the public.

The reception is Sunday, June 22, 2008, from 2 to 4 PM. The show will
hang until the end of July. The Arts and Science Center for Southeast
Arkansas at 701 Main St., Pine Bluff, AR 71601 (phone 870-536-3375)
will host the event.
This is a chance to discover how a productive artist delivers art to
the public. She first captures the original core image from nature
and life experiences. The second step is to choose an interesting and
inspiriting image to paint, and selecting the media carefully that has
the color and texture to flesh out the subject. Landscape , where
some images are captured in plein aire, is suited for pastel and oil
media. The subtle, soft effects of watercolor fit well with floral
and abstract subjects. Collage media collates well with spontaneity
and abstract works.

Marlene's works are also on display at the downtown Little Rock Cox
Creative Gallery, the El Dorado Backwoods Gallery, the Hot Springs
Artist Workshop Gallery, and the West Monroe, LA Ouachita River Art
Gallery.

Jewel J at KASU Blue Monday Paragould

KASU Blue Monday =96 Paragould

Jewel J to perform

June 16th at 7:00 PM

KASU presents Jewel J at the next Blue Monday-Paragould on June 16th
from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Brittny's Steakhouse in downtown Paragould.

Jewel Jones, "Jewel J", grew up in Arlington, TN - located near
Memphis. Jones began singing in her church at the tender age of ten.
After living in Chicago for seven years, she relocated back to
Memphis. Upon her return, she joined her church choir. Although her
roots were gospel oriented, she's always had a burning desire to be a
Rhythm & Blues singer.

Having minimum success performing with local Memphis bands, Jones
recorded a bicentennial album which led to concert tours abroad in
Germany and Italy for our U.S. Troops. She also toured and performed
in Japan and France.

Her first big break came when she recorded songs with and became a
background singer for Shirley Brown. Jones has also worked with
artists like J. Blackfoot and Ann Hines. She later formed a group
called "Something Special" which included friends Mary Burgess, Tonya
Jones and Jones, herself. They became the opening act and background
singers for Denise LaSalle. Jones was given the opportunity to record
her very own CD entitled, "The Goddess of the Blues". This project led
to a tour with Jerry Lee Lewis and paved the way for a music video
featuring Kid Rock.

Jones was given a second opportunity to record a CD produced by Q.T.

Sunday In The Park News

We've been having a blast at Sunday In The Park. Chris "Stinger"
Stevens and Robb Shelley from Bradford, Illinois joined Suzanne
Michell, Uncle Fred, and The Mudcats for some hot electric and
acoustic jams. The Mudcat set is primo and you can hear it here.

I will be posting more pics and audio as we go. Stay tuned at Delta Boogie.

I just got back from another one. 8ght Mile, Shugga Shane, and Snap
Crow Legs. The bass man and drummer with 8ght Mile joined us in pre
show blues jams and then they stayed on stage to play with Shugga
Shane. What a great show.

We have three more shows scheduled this spring, every Sunday through June 22.

June 15 is Father's day and my family band, Hairy Larry and The Flying
Hungarians will play. Also featured Father's day are Ricky Rooker and
George Hinds. So bring your father to the Craighead Forest Bandshell
and enjoy the music.

Full schedule and some more audio here.
