        Everest - John Lee Hooker

The unmistakable John Lee Hooker playing "Little Wheel" from his
Everest LP "John Lee Hooker". Born in 1920 in Clarksdale
Mississippi and still producing today John Lee is a living legend
in the blues. Kicking us off tonight another blues legend from
Clarksdale, Muddy Waters, sang "Canary Bird" a song about his
home. We also heard Johnny Billington, Clarksdale's Blues
Mentor, a man actively involved in blues education pushing
Clarksdale and the entire region into the future of the blues.
Johnny sang "Early in the Morning" recorded at Rooster Blues for
the "Clarksdale Mississippi: Coahoma the Blues" album.

Here's a Muddy Waters treat. Three songs from "B.B. King, Muddy
Waters, Big Mama Thornton, Live at Newport". Here's Muddy Waters
singing "Long Distance Call".

play - Muddy Waters, Long Distance Call 5:13
        PILZ, Live at Newport

play - Muddy Waters, Where's My Woman Been 4:19
        PILZ, Live at Newport

play - Muddy Waters, Got My Mojo Workin' 3:44
        PILZ, Live at Newport

Muddy Waters "Got My Mojo Workin'". It just don't get no better
than this. Also "Live at Newport" we heard "Long Distance Call"
and "Where's my Woman Been". Now, from the same CD, here's Big
Mama Thornton doing a song she wrote, "Ball and Chain.

play - Big Mama Thornton, Ball and Chain 7:42
        PILZ, Live at Newport

play - John Lee Hooker, Crawling King Snake 2:38
        Everest - John Lee Hooker

All Right, the John Lee Hooker classic "Crawling King Snake".
I'm just pulling out all the stops showcasing blues talent from
Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Besides being "Coahoma the Blues" Clarksdale is also home of the
Sunflower River Blues Festival and the Delta Blues Museum. This
year the festival runs from August 1 to August 7 with programs at
the Delta Blues Museum all week; Blues Festival Performances on
Friday and Saturday, August 5th and 6th; and Gospel Music on
Sunday, August 7th.

Headlining Friday night is Big Jack Johnson and Saturday night,
Bobby Rush. Also appearing are R.L. Burnside, Jr. Kimbrough, Big
George Brock, Otha Turner and the Rising Sun Fife and Drum Band,
Lonnie Shields, Lonnie Pitchford, Eugene Powell, Jack Owens and
Bud Spires, Maxwell Street Jimmy Davis, Mojo Buford, Johnny
Billington and many more.

The main stage is at the train depot and an acoustic stage is at
the Delta Blues Museum. The entire festival is Free. For more
information call the Delta Blues Museum at 601-624-4461. Or call
Jim O'Neal at The Stackhouse, 601-627-2209.

Jim runs Rooster Blues where he records Delta Blues artists. He
recorded "Clarksdale, Mississippi: Coahoma the Blues" featuring
many Clarksdale artists that can be heard at the festival. I
bought a cassette copy. You can get it at The Stackhouse or the
Delta Blues Museum. From it, here's Arthneice Jones, the Gas Man,
doing "Annie Mae".

play - Arthneice Jones, Annie Mae 3:33
Rooster Blues - Clarksdale Missippi: Coahoma the Blues

play - John Lee Hooker, Country Boy 7:00
Pickwick - never get out of these blues alive

play - Wesley Jefferson, (Hey Theresa) Don't throw Your Love on me so
Hard (Strong) 3:00
Rooster Blues - Clarksdale Missippi: Coahoma the Blues

And that's Wesley Jefferson, another contemporary Clarksdale
bluesman doing "(Hey Theresa) Don't throw Your Love on me so
Hard". Before that John Lee Hooker and Elvin Bishop did "Country
Boy". Arthneice Jones and the Stone Gas Band and The Wesley
Jefferson Band will be at the Sunflower River Blues Festival.

Big Jack Johnson is from Clarksdale. Sam Carr is from Dundee and
Frank Frost lives across the river in Helena, Arkansas. I have
enjoyed the Sunflower River Blues Festival because not only do
you get to hear bluesmen like Jack and Frank and Sam, Arthneice
Jones, Wesley Jefferson, and Johnny Billington; you also get to
meet them. The Sunflower River Blues Festival is a Free
Festival, not a huge concert called a festival.

I am also proud to announce that Sam Carr and Frank Frost will be
joining us here in Jonesboro for Blues Fest 94 at Craighead
Forest Park, Sunday, September 4th. Also featured at Blues Fest
94, Larry Donn, E.C. Brown, Joe Lee, Jonathan Green, and Aaron
Love, not to mention Hairy Larry and the Flying Hungarians.

So head on down to Clarksdale next weekend and then catch Frank
and Sam again at Blues Fest 94. Here's Frank Frost now with Big
Jack Johnson, guitar, and Little Sam Carr, drums, from the
"Midnight Prowler" CD, "Scratch my Back".

play - Frank Frost, Scratch My Back 4:07
        Earwig - Midnight Prowler

play - Big Jack Johnson, Doodley Squat 5:44
Earwig - Daddy When is Mama Comin Home?

voice over - Closing the show this is Big Jack Johnson playing
"Doodley Squat". Until next week, then, this is Hairy Larry
reminding you once again, Blues is the Mainstream.
