blues ... for you.
play - John Shepherd, So Tired 7:10
All right, by now some of you are wondering what Something Blue
is doing here on a Friday night. Well this is the Blues Fest 93
Special and we are playing music by bluesmen that will be playing
at the festival the day after tomorrow. That's right, Blues Fest
93, Sunday September 5th, from Noon until Dark, at Craighead
Forest Park, Pavilion One, out in the sun, Blues Fest 93, it's
Free.
Kicking us off tonight we heard Cliff Camarata play the "Hokey
Organ Blues". Cliff will be featured in the Tribute to Stevie
Ray Vaughn that starts the festival at 12:30. Then we heard John
Shepherd and Jam Nation do "So Tired" a song John wrote. Playing
with John are Dan Ferguson, bass and Tommy Riley, drums.
The Blues Dudes used to be the house band at the Philosophy Shop.
Let's listen to them play a blues standard "Black Cat Bone".
play - Blues Dudes, Black Cat Bone 6:51
The Blues Dudes featuring Jonathan Green will be at Craighead
Forest Park Sunday afternoon. Playing with Jonathan were Terry
Carter, sax; Dan "The Man" Ferguson, bass; and Tommy Riley,
drums.
A band and a song associated with Blues Fest 91 was Jonesboogie
Blues doing "Further on Up the Road". They've moved on to become
Aloysius but I still like this cut that we used to promote Blues
Fest 91.
play - Jonesboogie Blues, Further on Up the Road 4:25
Yeah, Perry Osborn, guitar; David Snell bass; Paul Richardson,
piano; and Eric Johansen, drums. A blast from the past.
Aloysius retains most of the band members from Jonesboogie Blues
and adds Jeff Glover, trumpet and vocals. Be sure to come to the
park Sunday afternoon to hear Aloysius.
Cottonmouth was a hot band back in the seventies opening for
Lynyrd Skynyrd and Styx. The core of the Cottonmouth band still
plays together for fun and they have added Jamie Coffey, harp and
Terry Carter, sax. They are now called The West Finch Blues
Band. Let's listen to them play "Oh Pretty Woman".
play - West Finch, Oh Pretty Woman 3:52
That's Larry Rothgery, guitar and Mike Tuseth, guitar and vocals
playing "Oh Pretty Woman. They will be joined by Andy Fulkerson
on his Hammond B3 Sunday afternoon at Blues Fest 93.
Now we're going to hear Larry Donn Gillihan do a boogie woogie
number, "Chatanooga Shoeshine Boy".
play - Larry Donn, Chatanooga Shoeshine Boy 3:02
And that's Larry Donn, International Rockabilly Celebrity
and resident of Bono, Arkansas. This cut was recorded for
Something Blue at the VFW and featured the Killer Possum Band;
Terry Carter, sax; Philip Jackson, bass; and Mark Pungercar,
drums. Rumor has it that Will Heiber will be rejoining the
Killer Possum Band at Blues Fest 93.
We had a great session last week with E.C. Brown, Mike Overall,
and Joe Lee. Let's listen to a classic Billy Holiday blues now
as E.C. sings "God Bless the Child".
play - E.C. Brown, God Bless the Child/There Will... 8:36
And that's E.C. Brown singing "There Will Never Be Another You"
accompanied by a great jazz band; Mike Overall, drums and Joe
Lee, sax.
If you were watching Scene Midday today you saw Aaron Love and
his TV Band. Let's listen now to a song Aaron cut that Joe Lee
recorded on Alley Records and the features Mike Overall and Larry
Rothgery, two musicians who will also be playing at Blues Fest 93
but in different bands. So here's Aaron Love singing "I'm Gonna
Love Ya".
play - Aaron Love, I'm Gonna Love Ya 2:27
Hairy Larry and the Flying Hungarians are the host band at Blues
Fest 93 and we will be kicking off the volunteer jams as a Finale
for the show. Come on out to Blues Fest 93, Sunday afternoon at
Craighead Forest Park in Jonesboro, Arkansas. Take the 1B exit
off the bypass because construction is still going on. Look for
the Craighead Forest Park signs. We're going to play a little
bit of our set from last year at Blues Fest 92 to try to
encourage you to come and join the party. We'll be there to help
you get the blues.
play - Hairy Larry, Sing... Early 8:00
play - E.C. Brown, Memphis Underground 5:55
Closing the show we have E.C. Brown with Mike Overall on drums
and Joe Lee, flute playing "memphis "Underground". Until next
week, then, this is Hairy Larry reminding you, once again, Come
to Blues Fest 93, Sunday afternoon at Craighead Forest Park.
