Greenville, Mississippi
Legendary Blues Woman, Mamie Davis Passes
October 6, 2001

It saddens me to report the the death of Mamie "Galore" Davis, Greenville legendary blueswoman. She was recently hospitalized and underwent open-heart surgery on her birthday. She suffered a fatal stroke on Wednesday and was pronounced clinically dead Friday about 4pm but not offically as such until Saturday. She was honored with a stone on the Greenville Blues Walk on Walnut Street and received the fourth Eugene Powell-Sonny Boy Nelson award preceeding the Delta Blues Festival. I have no info on arrangements at this time but will keep you informed.

Visitation for Mamie Davis will be Friday, October 12 from 1-5 PM at Redmond Funeral Home Chapel on North Broadway in Greenville. The funeral will be at the chapel Saturday morning at 11:00 am unless changed by family. A benefit to help pay funeral expenses, (I'm told they lack $1900 to be able to pay all expenses) will be at the MACE building on Theobald St. between Main and Washington, Friday evening from 6-9pm.
